Madrigal: Neruda’s Poema XX is based on one of Pablo Neruda’s most famous love poems, the 20th poem from Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada (Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair). Published when he was only 20, they already exemplify the lyricism, imagery, humanity and directness that would make Neruda (1904-1973) famous. Poema 20 is well known in Latin America. During one of Neruda’s many reading tours the audience begged him to recite it. He sadly informed them that he had not brought a copy of the poem, and had not committed it to memory. They proceeded to recite the whole thing back to him in unison.

The first recording, featuring Laura Anderson, soprano, was made in 2007 for her Graduate Recital at the University of Minnesota.

The 2nd recording, also featuring Laura Anderson, is with a smaller ensemble featuring Caitlin Taylor-Johnson, flute; Polly Malan, viola and Jennifer Cass, harp. This recording is from ca. 2005.
